How To Take Care Of Teak Patio Furniture

By Charles Rockelman

Teak outdoor furniture is the best quality outdoor furniture imaginable. Outdoor teak furniture is also extremely simply to look after. Teak has special qualities which make it the best for use outside. Outdoor teak furniture requires a small amount attention to last a long time.

Teakwood is one of the most costly woods. However, you should consider that teak garden furniture is a worthwhile investment due to its durability.

It is best to clean up your teak outdoor furniture sometimes to undo a buildup of dirt. You can spray water using a garden hose under low pressure to rinse the dirt and dust away. Afterwards, using a soft brush, scrub the furniture not too roughly with a mix of water, dish soap, and a couple tablespoons of bleach. Using bleach too often will lighten the wood so adding bleach is not necessary. Then rinse once more with clean water. Dry with a towel or large rag finally.

Teak outdoor furniture that is kept outside will naturally start to gradually fade color from the golden honey shade of freshly cut wood to become a silver-gray color. This process of teakwood becoming gray is normal and just affects the outer appearance. It does not affect the stability of your patio furniture.

There are people really like the golden tone of new teak wood and treat with teak oil to try to restore it. However, teak oil is going to cause more trouble because it must be reapplied every three months from the time you begin applying it. Oil could also increase the likelihood for mildew and black spots to form. It is better to apply teak sealer yearly after cleaning your outdoor teak furniture in order to try to preserve the golden coloring.

You may opt to buy a furniture cover for your teak patio furniture, especially for the winter months or if your home is in a place that gets a lot of dust. If you select to do so, be sure to find a furniture cover made with a breathable fabric. Do not get a plastic cover which is certain to trap moisture. It would raise the possibility of mildew growing on your furniture.

Stubborn stains including wine or coffee can get taken care of with a light sanding of the very top layer of the teak garden furniture. You can begin with a medium paper and then finish with a fine grade paper to make the surface of the teak smooth. Sanding is also a method to bring out the honey coloring of teak furniture because you expose a new layer of teak wood that is still saturated with natural oils.

Regardless if your furniture is a teak adirondack chair or a teak dining table, a little maintenance will go far.

So you can see, your teak furniture will last decades with not even much care for you to do. Because it lasts for so long, teak is better than other types of wood. You can know that any teak outdoor set you get at this time should be handed down to your children.
