How To Take Care Of Teak Patio Furniture

By Dustin Rockelman

Teak furniture is the most excellent quality garden furniture imaginable. Teak outdoor furniture is also very simple to look after. Teak has special properties that make it perfect for using outside. Teak garden furniture needs only a little maintenance to look good for many years.

Teakwood is an expensive wood. Nevertheless, you can conclude that teak outdoor furniture is a worthy investment because of its long life.

It is best to clean your outdoor teak furniture on occasion in order to undo a buildup of dirt or dust. The easiest is to use a hose without high pressure to rinse the dust off. After that, using a soft brush, wash the surface of the wood gently with a mixture of water, dish soap, and a few spoonfuls of bleach. If you use too much bleach is going to cause a pale color so adding bleach is optional. Afterwards, rinse another time with pure water.

Teak patio furniture that is kept outdoors will naturally start to slowly fade color from the golden honey shade of freshly cut wood to be a silver-gray color. This process of teak wood becoming silver-gray is normal and purely cosmetic. The process does not do anything to the longevity of your teak outdoor furniture.

Some buyers prefer the honey shade of new teak patio furniture and apply teak oil in an attempt to maintain the honey color. However, teak oil is not good because it must be reapplied every three months once you begin applying it. Teak oil could also increase the probability for mildew to appear. It is better to apply teak sealer annually after cleaning your outdoor teak furniture to try to keep the honey tone.

You may select to use furniture covers to protect your teak garden furniture, especially in the winter or if you live in an area that gets a lot of dust. If you choose to do so, be certain to purchase furniture covers made with a breathable fabric. Do not get a plastic cover that is bound to trap moisture. It would raise the possibility of mold and mildew growing on the surface.

Dark stains like coffee can be removed with using sandpaper on the very top layer of the teak furniture. Start with a medium grade sandpaper and then end with a fine grade to get the surface of the wood nice and smooth. Sanding like this is also a way of bringing out the golden coloring of teak furniture since you are exposing a fresh layer of teak that is still saturated with oil.

It doesn't matter if your furniture is a teak rocker or a teak dining table, a bit of care will go far.

So you can see, your teak garden furniture can last for many years with very little care on your part. Since it lasts such a long time, teak wood is better than other varieties of hardwood. You will enjoy knowing that a teak dining set you get now should be enjoyed by your family in future generations.
