While talking with my friend the other day, they told me about a thought they had. They're an eager quilter, with a preference for patchwork quilts and while working on one, they noticed a correlation between the way in which the quilt itself was similar to life in a number of ways.
Colourful Personality
Each patchwork quilt is one of a kind piece, made of many different bits of materials and when it comes together it forms a quilt that's unique in its own way.
This too is right for each human on this earth, each of us has had different experiences "some good, some bad, and these form together to make up the individual they are now.
Character
Just like people have characters patchwork quilts have characters of their own too. The unique colours of the materials and the feeling of the textures employed in it all combine to make a quilt which has different qualities than other of the same sorts of quilts.
A very simliar line can be drawn around how people are made up. The people they encounter in life, their teachers, mentors and the experiences they have, all weave together to form a character that will react in a different way to different situations.
It's this unique array of character traits and experiences that we identify with, and warm to, as their own story shines through and warms our hearts.
Length
Cruising through life, you collect experiences and memories. So that the longer you live the more you collect, and that is why older people have lots of experiences and stories they can share.
The same thing is applicable to these quilts. The longer you work on them, the more pieces get added to the quilt, the bigger it becomes each one has its own story to take note of.
You know what? I think my friend was on to something! I think I'm going to have a good hard look at my prior patchwork quilts and see what sort of lives they lived.
