Learning How To Play Guitar

By Jack Wogan

If you are a true guitar-enthusiast and you have already purchased the guitar of your dreams, you must be more than eager to get started on those first lessons. Since there are a number of ways you can learn how to play guitar, it is best to weight your options before you get to work and decide which method is best suited for your personality, financial and time resources. Here are some suggestions you may benefit from.

The most important thing you need to do is study your guitar - the actual physical instrument. You need to fully understand the function of every guitar part and way they all work together to make sounds and music. Another key to a great performance is learning fret and muscle memory. Practicing in front of the TV or when you have people over will help you a great deal. Being distracted by the conversation, you will lose the tendency to keep looking down at your fingers while playing the guitar.

Sharing the experience with other people as passionate as you about mastering the guitar is another method of learning. To can organize study groups to practice what you learned online or buy guitar learning DVDs. These DVDs usually offer a year's worth of guitar lessons and also come with a handbook that makes it easier for you to follow the notes and the audio instructions. Just remember you need to practice daily in order to improve your skills - around 30 minutes a day will do it - and that learning from the others' mistakes (or your own!) is the best way to do it. If money isn't an issue, you can always hire a guitar professor to train you privately and provide the feedback you need to make progress.

Another idea is to record yourself while practicing, so you can find out which are your strengths and weaknesses. While recording, make it fun and test different sounds effects to see which style reflects your personality. You can experiment with amplifiers or guitar effects pedals and add a personal note to your favorite songs.

Probably the most important thing you need to do in order to become a great guitar player is to get to know your instrument. Study the different components of the guitar and understand how they work together to make sounds and music. Learn fret and muscle memory by practicing in front of the TV or when you have company over. This way you will be distracted and forget to look down at your fingers touching the chords. Last but not least, work on your body posture. Choose the best position for your back, shoulders, arms and legs, so you don't get numb while playing. In the end, all it takes is passion, hard work and determination. Pour your soul into your guitar and it will reward you plentifully.
