Commuter Bikes & the Tips Drivers Should Keep In Mind

By Rob Sutter

People who put commuter bikes to use constantly may want to know the facts. For example, Oklahoma has seen a great spike in accidents on the road and motorists have struck pedestrians during these. Many severe accidents have occurred and a few deaths as well. Last year, Oklahoma has seen 609 accidents with 47 of them dying. It shouldn't have occurred, of course, but AAA Oklahoma has taken action by urging riders to be more alert with various tips.

1. Putting the road with cars to good use. This is an example of safety on the road in which cyclists and motorists work as one in order to travel and keep things moving at a constant pace. It's normal for pedestrians to use the side and crosswalks but too many cyclists have started to use those very roads when they shouldn't have. A number of accidents seemed to occur as a result. For the sake of promoting road safety, cyclists should stick to sharing the road with those who utilize automobiles.

2. Adhere to the road's rules. Too many bikers seem to disregard the rules, believing that they only exist for car and bus drivers. However, those very rules apply to those who use commuter bikes just as well and should be respected. Cyclists should don helmets when going out to ride. Also, it's important for cyclists to halt at all major intersections in order to follow stop signs which apply not solely to drivers. Biking authorities along the lines of Linus Bike make note of the blind spot that these riders have and it's up to the riders to account for it.

3. Helmets are important for any session of biking but what is mandatory especially for night driving is the usage of reflective lights. These serve greatly as the headlights of sorts on automobiles and it may be seen as wrong for a bike not to utilize them. These are quite useful and they ensure a cyclist's safety, along with that of a pedestrian, that much more. Lights come in both passive and active forms and what you may need hinges on where you live but it's smart to go beyond the minimum that the law details.

It seems like these tips had to come to light and I'm certain that there are many others that can be utilized in the ways of bike riding. Safety has to be a priority when you consider just how many accidents there have been in recent memory. Oklahoma has seen number of 309 bicyclists that have been in crashes as well. While this isn't as great a number as the 609 accidents as stated before, it's still a number that should not exist.
