Tips On Catfishing Baits

By Diane Spencer

What is a catfish? Catfish is a type of fish that usually lives in freshwater but can also live in saltwater. They are known for their barbell which can be found near their jaws and are javelin-like. This barbell is used by the catfish to increase their perception and to screen their surroundings which is quite similar to the function of the cat's whiskers. Another feature of this barbell is that it contains taste glands that helps the catfish to to catch fish especially when their visibility is low like in the dark waters.

Catfish are naturally omnivorous but they are also scavengers making it easy for people who want to catch them to use a wide variety of baits. But if you want to catch catfish that are of large sizes, you have to be aware of the proper baits to use and the proper techniques to use them. Here are some tips and techniques on how to use the catfishing baits properly:

-Find the right location to do your catfishing and use your bait. This is important because not being able to find the right location to throw your bait will just be a waste of time even if you use the best catfishing bait. Usually, catfish likes to stay in places where there is a bend that normally has an overhang because this gives them some kind of protection. Aside from that, you can also try to observe the water for some minor movements and throw your bait into that spot and check what happens. Also, it is important to keep in mind to keep your bait in place and as much as possible with little to no movements.

-It is recommended to go catfishing during early morning and evening because during these times, the sun is not up. This is because catfishes are known not to feed when the sun is up so catfishing when the sun is not up increases your chances of catching a lot of catfishes.

-Another important factor to consider when catfishing is the size of the hook to be used. The best way to know what size of hook is appropriate is by observing the catfishes' reaction towards the hook that you are currently using. if you can see that the catfishes just bite around your bait and not able to swallo it as a whole, your bait is too big and you can opt to use smaller bait. Another option is to ask local catfishers what size of hook they usually use in order to catch catfishes. These two methods will help you to find out the proper size of hook that you can use in catfishing.

Now what are the most commonly used catfishing bait?

-Because of its meaty smell, chicken liver is considered one of the most popular catfishing baits.

-Shrimp. This is another popular choice to be used as catfishing bait because it is easy to keep on hook despite heavy currents.

-Worms. Regardless of what type of worms you use as catfishing bait, this is a good choice to use especially during winter and spring months.

Catfishes are easy to catch because of the wide variety of baits that you can use in catching them because of their being scavenger and omnivorous in nature. You can choose to use this different catfishing baits like bread dough, plastic worms, hotdogs, sausages and many others. To ensure that you will be able to catch good amount and sizes of catfishes, be sure to do your catfishing on the proper time and on the appropriate area.
