Gold Jewelry

By Sienna Nalin

Are you thinking about selling your gold jewelry? Before doing so you may want to check and see if your jewelry is even solid gold or not. If your jewelry is not, it may be an upset to you as far as the money that you were expecting. In order to not have this upset, you should check to see if your jewelry is gold plated or not.

Let's first start by actually stating the difference between gold plated jewelry and sold gold jewelry. Gold plated jewelry is composed of a non-gold metal that is covered with a film of gold. As far as solid gold jewelry goes, it is an item that has a gold alloy throughout it.

In order to tell if you have an item that is gold plated, you can tell by looking for the marking on the jewelry that will tell you that. These markings are usually on the clasp. If it is marked with GP, GEP, HGE, or HGP all of these means that it is gold plated. If you cannot find a marking, that does not mean anything, you just have to go get it checked.

Here's how acid testing works: The jeweler will take some sample material from your jewelry and then apply acid to it to observe if there is a color change, which will indicate what metals the sample contains. Acid testing is used mainly to determine the karat of solid gold jewelry, but it can also indicate whether the piece is plated.

Gold plated jewelry can also be spotted based upon its color. Most plated jewelry is plated in 24 karat gold which means it is extremely yellow in color. Jewelry that contains gold throughout cannot be pure solid 24 karat gold because it could easily be flawed. That is why pieces that contain gold throughout are made with a gold alloy.

A common way to inspect your jewelry is by seeing if the color of your jewelry is the same throughout. If there is a color difference where there is another color underneath, it is gold plated.
