The piece of clothing was worn a lot alongside the cape sometime in the late 1400s by both the Hindus and the Muslims, then their masters. However it is only after Guru Nanak and his nine successors wore it daily that it bore any significance. This is talked of in the Guru Granth Sahib, Sikh Holy scripture.

During the fifteenth century when the Sikh religion was founded, at this time the Hindus were slaves to the Muslims and they all wore the head garments and caps. Guru Nanak continued this tradition from his birth and also kept his hair long. Nine of those who succeed him continued this tradition; this is referred in the Guru Granth Sahib, Holy scripture for the script.

The garment got global fame when it was spotted exactly behind the Queen's family in the Diamond Jubilee merriments which marked the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. It was worn by a young man from a British Sheikh institution. The garment went on to become a global trending topic especially on social media.

Wearing this garment showed your commitment and dedication to obeying your Guru and that you will serve everyone even if they have negative intentions, in the blue garment case this means protecting them. The garment is not considered just a piece of clothing but a self crowning of the individual. It represents respectability and is also a sign of nobility.

There is another purpose of the garment, religious and culture aside. This garment also has a technological aspect to it. As it is known the Sikh are not for cutting hair, they thus fold the long hair into folds known as the Rishi knots. According to the Sikh this knot is important as it concentrates the energy of meditations to the person. Now the role of the many wrappings of the head gear is to hold together the twenty six bones of the skull.
