The Magic of Toy Model Trains

By Bill Andrew

Toys like Thomas the Train has awakened many a boy's wonderment about the fascinating machines, and trains do have an addictive pull to them. Real young boys view these talking trains on television in their houses, when they did not even know what made them so special. When the boys get to be men they learn to understand why they were attracted to them as boys and still are as men; feeling power by operating such a machine.

Ever wonder why men like to fiddle with certain toys? It may just be the fact they are captivated with operating a machine with such power, even though it is a fraction of the size of the real thing. It could also be trying to figure out how the trains operate and the way the power runs through the system to make them operate. One other thing it could be is how organized running the trains are with them only working on their tracks. Another theory is that the men are trying to recapture memories of years past with the train traveling around the Christmas tree. This makes men want to enjoy those moments again with the model toy trains. Really at this point they are not toy trains but just model trains. The version the men play with have matured along with the men, so that they are meant to be played with by men.

The toy trains are usually made cheaply out of plastic and you find them in many stores at Christmas time. They are not that well-built and are priced right to buy for children to start them on their way with this hobby. As the boys get older they become men. As the toy trains change and mature (to use the term lightly) then they become locomotives. These are very well-built for the most part and last a long time. The locomotives are of better quality and run much easier than the toy or trains of low quality do. The wheels even fit better onto the tracks so that the electricity can better flow to the train to make it run. These are the qualities that my the model-train hobbyist grin. On top of this the locomotive's engines are more powerful. A more powerful engine can pull more easily and can handle more load. These better locomotives are constructed with metal instead of cheap plastic as with the toy versions. How heavy these trains are will affect they way the train operates. This is where heavier is better, because it will make greater contact with its track, and the result is the train running more efficiently.

When the electric trains aren't enough the men can also find the steam engines which definitely please the little boy in them. As with the electric trains you can find various qualities of the steam engines, but what a great thrill watching the trains with their steam drifting over the landscaping.

Only a small number of boys actually grow and a get to be train engineers. Many of the train engineers look at their jobs as work though to be sure instead of the culmination of a boy's dream. But not all of us men need to be train engineers to see our dreams fulfilled. We instead can have our dream through our hobby of model trains.
