Understanding the Foam Humidifier

By Drew Danson

When you first start purchasing your cigar accessories, one item that will be of high importance will be the humidor of course. This humidor is vital to preserving your cigars so that you can truly enjoy their taste and flavor. This is because the humidor creates a constant environment of controlled levels of humidity. This humidity keeps the flavor locked within the tobacco. This is why it is so important that you purchase and understand the humidor thoroughly. There are many parts to the humidor that you will need to understand because you will need to perform routine maintenance on them. One such part is the foam humidifier. Of course, without a humidifier, it would be quite hard for the humidor to work.

Just how do you know when the foam humidifier needs to be replaced? There are actually two tell tale signs that you can watch for. If you keep an eye on these two signs, you can make sure that your humidor is constantly in proper working order, which is a must to keep your cigars fresh and flavorful.

Have you ever noticed how an old sponge will stop wanting to soak up water? The same holds true for the foam humidifier. After a time, it will not want to soak up the solution properly anymore. This should be a very noticeable sign, and when you see it, you will know that you need to replace the foam. As mentioned, it could take years to get to this point, but eventually the foam will wear out.

The second way to tell that you need to replace the foam will be when it will not soak up the water solution properly. Over time, as the foam in the humidor begins to wear out, it will not soak up as well, much like an old worn out sponge. You may have more problems getting the foam to take the water. It may be a gradual sign or it may happen fairly quickly. No matter the case, when you notice the foam is not soaking well, this is a good sign that you need to replace it.

Part of taking up the hobby of cigars is knowing how to properly care for the accessories that you will need, like the cigar humidor. Since the foam humidifier will eventually wear out over time, knowing what to look for is a good idea so that you can keep the humidor in proper working order.
