Since energy is wasted at night, it is smart to get a programmable thermostat. Being able to set the temperature several degrees lower, when no one is around, will save energy and money also. If you get an insulation blanket for your hot water heater, you can save money too. Insulation blankets can be installed without any problem, and they are available at any hardware store. The fiberglass blanket confines the heat when you wrap it around the hot water tank, and will pay for itself the first year that you get it.

One other method is to just go for the tankless hot water solution. This is a great option if you are thinking of replacing your hot water tank. Instead of heating the entire tank of water, and make sure it remains heated, you can get the water heated as you need it. The tankless hot water system uses less energy thus you'll be saving as much as 50% off your energy costs. You will be able to save some money and energy by keeping your home cool the natural way. Your home can be kept cool with a simple ceiling fan and keeping the screens and drapes shut. Try setting your air conditioner at 75 degrees and just go colder if it is getting overly hot in your home.

Still another alteration that will cost in the beginning, but save you money in the long run, is replacing incandescent lightbulbs. Compact fluorescent light bulbs are very efficient, using 75% less electricity and lasting ten times longer than average lightbulbs. Not only will you save money, but they won't fill up the landfills. If you just changed five light bulbs, you can save up to $30 each year. The best thing to do is to just turn off the lights when you exit from a room. Most of us are guilty of doing this, so if we all changed, lots of energy would be saved.

If everyone made it a policy in their home whenever exiting a room to turn the lights off always, then the same could be done with all electronic devices that are used.
