DIY Party Craft Ideas For Any Event

By Janine Hughes

There are numerous inexpensive and impressive ways to create one-of-a-kind items for a particular occasion. Once executed properly, DIY party craft ideas can be very effective and eliminate the need for a decorator or event planner. Crafts can be used just once or over and over again, and they are lots of fun to make with others as well.

Kids' parties are always a great occasion to incorporate a bit of DIY craft, whether there is a theme or not. Allow the party guests to be part of the action by having a Build-Your-Own-Cupcake station. Use plastic palettes for painting as plates and put a plain or frosted cupcake in the middle of the palette.

In each of the grooves of the palette, you can put a different kind of topping for each child to use. Good toppings are chocolate drops, gummy bears, sprinkles and jelly beans. You can also make fun little toppers for them to finish with, either on a straw or on a toothpick.

Try incorporating the boy/girl theme into decor for a baby shower but also make it a game to get guests going. If the mother-to-be hasn't revealed the baby's gender, randomly stick pink and blue balloons on the wall. Have guests either throw a dart or prick a balloon with a pin to try and see if they can guess correctly.

Each of the balloons will have a note inside that says 'Try again!', with the exception of the winning balloon. The winning balloon in the corresponding colour will say 'Yes! It's a boy!' or 'Yes! It's a girl!' The person who chose that balloon wins the game.

A New Year's celebration is a glam event that deserves lots of sparkle. It is not difficult to bring something special to everyday items to achieve such an effect. Votive candle holders can be decorated with a band of glitter by using a paintbrush to apply a band of PVA glue around the rim. Make this band about an inch wide. While the glue is wet, roll the holder around in some glitter in either gold or silver - or whatever other colour is desired - and allow it to dry. Tea light candles inside small glasses work just as well and this can be used as a table centrepiece or dotted around the venue.

Pinatas don't just have to be for kids and they can be a lot of fun to make as well as burst. Use cardboard and cut out whatever shapes are necessary to form a 3D structure. A star or moon is a good shape to use for a party with adult guests. Fill the pinata with age-appropriate goodies or just hang them in various sizes as decorations.

Try making a simple but effective ice bucket or drinks cooler for Halloween by cutting a pumpkin in half and scooping out the inside. Place a glass bowl inside this pumpkin bowl and fill it with ice. Drinks can also be put in the ice to keep them cool. Since one pumpkin will make two ice buckets, it's a great way to have several placed around the room.
