Controlling Invasive Plants With Organic Lawn Weed Killer

By Enid Hinton

A weed is any plant that grows in a surrounding that is not of its own. They can be frustrating especially if they grow on the garden lawns. The beauty of such lawns will be interfered with. Fortunately, there is an organic lawn weed killer that aids in getting rid of the problem.

Intrusive shrubs like any other plant requires moisture and sunlight to grow. It can grow just about anywhere as long as there is space and the two components. Nevertheless, there are conditions that might activate its development. For example, wet grasses and improper or not applying fertilizers. These two conditions would weaken the plants and grasses in the front or back yard hence creating space for its growth. To prevent such, a proper management yard program should be installed that would guide on maintaining a healthy yard.

Some yard owners use hand labor to remove the shrubs but this method is tiresome and time consuming especially if the shrub problem is severe. To save time and effort, chemical control method is used. That is to say, using organic pest killers. One should take note that for such methods to be effective, the chemicals should be applied at the correct time.

The right period therefore should be when there is enough sunlight and moisture in the atmosphere. Such conditions are available during summer. These conditions would foster growth of the invasive species and get a clear picture when applying the chemicals. Fertilizers especially nitrogen is to be applied not less than 10 days before using the chemicals.

There are several organic weed killers including:

Vinegar (acetic acid). It one of the non-selective killers. It causes death to both yard grass and weeds. It has a tendency of causing plants to desiccate and eventually death. Hence, when using the acid, yard owners should use brushes to directly paint it to specific plants in question.

Herbicidal soaps. They are non- selective and tends to break and interfere with the protective layer of leaves in plants. This causes dehydration and death of leaves. Unfortunately, they effectively work on newly upcoming shrubs and fail to kill roots for older and mature ones.

Corn gluten meal. It is most effective in specific environmental conditions and on weed saplings.

To apply the chemicals, one should follow specific instructions to get the best results. For instance, if using the liquid type of killers, one should be sure that it would not rain during the process to ensure the chemical is not washed away. In contrast, for granular products, it is advisable to water or irrigate the lawn after application.

When the process is complete, a prevention program should be installed. The program will work to ensure the same problem does not re appear. One way of prevention is using fertilizers to promote healthy growth. Secondly, applying the right and effective mowing methods.

In summary, one may use organic lawn weed killers as a solution to front or back yard problems but, without following the preventive methods re-emergence of the same problem would make it costly to maintain the lawns.
