Everything There Is To Know About Safety Glasses

By Ina Hunt

These glasses are usually designed with a primary role of providing protection to people as well as other fragile things in case the glass breaks. For them to withstand varying conditions, they are normally strengthened in various ways. Safety glasses are usually used in manufacture of eyeglasses, house windows as well as laboratory glassware among other products. Their designing provides maximum protection to their user in case of an accident.

A safety glass can either be made through tempering or through lamination. When it comes to tempering, the glass is basically exposed to different temperature ranges in order to be hardened. The variation in temperature usually increases the tensile strength of the glass. Tempering can basically be done to all types of glasses regardless of their width. The only difference which is made is the maximum temperature that a glass will be exposed to during tempering.

Just in case a glass which has been tempered breaks, it only snaps into rounded chunks which are apart. This is contrary to how it can break into jagged pieces if it was not tempered. These jagged pieces could be potentially dangerous. The best illustration for this kind of a glass is the side window of a car.

The ones which are laminated are usually made through sandwiching a polyvinyl sheet between two glass pieces. The glass is made stronger by the reinforcement and layering. The layering and reinforcement plays a critical role during an accident of any kind. Whether a minor accident or a serious one occurs, they do help a lot. They make the glass strong enough to withstand the pressure exerted on it.

The polythene layer between the two glass pieces usually holds the two pieces together whenever the glass is broken. This holds the dangerous glass shards together thus preventing them from causing any severe damage to a person. Vehicle windshields are mainly made with glasses which have been laminated. This is the reason why it can break and still remain a complete glass.

The designing of these glasses was initially meant to replace the conventional ones since they were weak and used to break often. The hardening makes them quite strong and hard to break as compared to the earlier ones which were not hardened. Both the tempered and the laminated glasses usually withstand impacts which can be considered to be severe.
