How Did Movies Show Me City Bicycling Values?

By Rob Sutter

City bicycling is something that I have memories of but you'd be surprised by just what origins these rest in. Some of them actually resided in film, whether you would like to believe it or not. It was one of those areas in which I couldn't help but to watch and "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" was the greatest example, to me, because of how great the scope of the movie proved itself to be. When talking about specific traits of the film, though, I can list off quite a few.

The ride that Pee-wee had was a vintage masterpiece that companies like Linus Bike would most definitely be able to support as well. I remembered it being one of the neatest things as a child and, as an adult, I still deem it a unique kind of vehicle. The shape was something that I never really saw in terms of city bicycling as a child. However, the gloss that it came with only helped to make the ride look that much more attractive and I was definitely envious when I first saw it at a younger age.

I think that while the bike's design deserves special mention, what about the actual plot of the movie? For those who have seen it in the past, you will know that Pee-wee must find his beloved ride which was stolen. This would result in him traveling around the world, practically, in order to be reunited with his beloved vehicle. It's clear that the plot sounds insane enough and with the same Pee-wee-esque humor thrown in for good measure, the movie seems to come together quite well.

The imagery in the film is also some of the strangest when it comes to a film intended for kids. One particular scene shows Pee-wee getting a lift from a character on the road by the name of Large Marge. During the scene, she turns and flashes an expression that contorts to something that you could only see in cartoons. It's only a second or two but it's something that has stuck with me as a child because of just how out of place it seemed in an otherwise bright film.

As you could imagine, I have a number of memories tied into the act of city bicycling and not all of them have to do specifically with the activity in question. I am someone who enjoyed movies for a long time as well, with "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" being one of the most unique examples I could have watched. Would I have enjoyed it any less if I didn't see it as a child? It's difficult to say, though I cannot argue with the idea that nostalgia is a powerful element.
