What You Need To Know On Outdoor Water Fountains

By Casandra Newton

Water cascading through nature is probably the most beautiful thing on display. People love visiting waterfalls, rivers and beaches because the image of water splashing against cliffs, rocks and barren land is exotic. By having outdoor water fountains, you too can bring this joy of nature back home. Let people who visit you marvel at the sight of a fountain cascading down its front. Let them gaze at this man made phenomenon that allows them to experience nature. A waterfall always draws attraction anywhere it is present, regardless of its size or origin.

Other than the image, waterfalls also offer the sound. Simply hearing a waterfall gives peace of mind. Moreover, the mist produced by the crashing effect of waterfall transfers moisture into air that then cools down temperatures, introduces better air circulation and many other things. Breathing in air near a waterfall has rejuvenating properties.

However, owning a fountain at home requires regular maintenance. One has to constantly monitor for wear and tear, repair damage and change water. Being exposed to the environment, it shall accumulate dirt, precipitate, animal droppings and other particles.

The porch fountain pump will always be an integral part of keeping the waterfall going. This is one thing that requires mandatory maintenance at least once every month. Things to watch out for are obstructions, blockage and damage to piping.

Regular scrubbing of the fountain surface is necessary as it is prone to accumulating waste, precipitate and algal bloom. These things shall eat away from the overall appeal of the fountain.

Algae usually prefer hot and humid environments to grow and the fountain surface offers just this during the summer months. To deal with the onslaught of algae bloom, try using a mildly concentrated solution of bleaching powder and a mild acid. Together, they should scrub algae off marble and stone areas rendering the surface completely clean. Another alternative is to use algae pesticides to stop its growth from the onset. While this is extremely effective, it is also equally fatal to birds and animals.

Bird droppings shall be a frequent issue with a porch or open fountain. This is because birds are naturally attracted to lakes and ponds hence they find a fountain an excellent resting place. All it takes to remove their droppings is a wet sponge and soap solution. Replacing the contaminated water may become necessary in case a bird dies inside it.

The final problem to deal with outdoor water fountains is mineral deposits. These usually appear as large white crusty structures which do not go away with mild scrubbing. Even soap solution shall not get rid of it. To clean it away use a solution of white vinegar with some other mild acid. This shall easily remove the deposits leaving the fountainhead squeaky clean. Moreover, minerals form faster if the water is not regularly replaced. Hence, ensure that the fountain is replenish with fresh supply from time to time.
