If you grew up during the 90's and watched a lot of Nickelodeon, I think it's safe to say that you had come across several game shows. While you had "Double Dare," which was unquestionably one of the most popular shows in the network's history, there were those which actually rewarded physical prowess. I can name off quite a couple of them and even after all of this time, they stick with me since they are fond memories. Obstacle course racing shows certainly took much of my time.
If there's one show that just about every 90's Nickelodeon fan will recall, it's "Guts." It was perhaps at the top of the proverbial food chain and I think a good portion of that came from the fact that it was purer. There wasn't much in the way of aesthetics and it was almost like the show didn't waste any time, which was what I enjoyed about it. "Guts" may have been enjoyable but I have another show that stands as my favorite from that time period.
My favorite of the bunch has got to be "Legends of the Hidden Temple." Despite the fact that it is absolutely silly by today's standards, I don't think that there's a single Nickelodeon fan that hasn't appreciated or even watched it. It mixed trivia in addition to athletics and being able to get through the temple was a test of intelligence and endurance. In addition, I always thought that the various shirts the competitors wore with colors and animal designs were some of the best.
"Legends of the Hidden Temple" has proven to be enjoyable but there are critics who have deemed this show a ripoff of the well-known "American Gladiators," to which I have an argument or two to share. You have to keep in mind that obstacle course racing shows were not exactly common on children's television, so it seemed only right to give this network a couple of its own. It should also be noted that the Mesoamerican theme is unique. It's apparent that the shows were successful and those fans would most likely enjoy events the likes of Spartan Race, too.
I've been accused of being nostalgic a time or two before but sometimes you can't help it. You look at the shows you watched in the past and it's almost like a sea of good memories washes over you and you can't help but to take it all in. Obstacle course racing is one of those subjects that I loved so much as a child and desired so much to participate in those games myself. As an adult, it's somewhat difficult to brush that desire away.
