Discover The Beauty Of Abstract Watercolor Painting

By Kerri Stout

The medium of watercolor is traditionally used to paint realistic images. However, its fluidity and luminescent qualities have encouraged many artists to create abstracts too. Abstract watercolor painting allows creativity to be stretched to its limits and experimentation is often part of the process. Expression ranges from the fluid to the more geometric and and figurative abstractions are also depicted and it is quite hard to define as so many different styles fall under this umbrella.

The subject matter is also as varied as the artists. Ideas and thoughts are just as important as concrete realities. Colors, forms and lines have more importance than create exact replicas of what is seen. Emotions are evoked in the viewer by the ways in which these elements are used.

Historically, there are a many famous artists who have experimented with abstraction. Kandinsky, a Russian, is thought to have been one of the first. He was later followed by many others. Picasso, Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock are just a few others who developed their own unique ways of abstract painting, whether this involved painting cubes, squares or spattering drips on huge canvases.

The challenge of the artist is to create work powerful enough to move the emotions of the viewer, rather than provide a clear image. Shape, size, color, line and form all contribute to the overall impression. In the best paintings of this nature, intensive technical processes intersect with emotional expression to evoke strong feelings in the viewer. Every element, including brush strokes and color, are used deliberately.

There are certain techniques that have to be mastered to use watercolors effectively. Learning how the various elements such as the paint, water and paper work together is essential. This often requires experimentation and practice to achieve the desired results. Another technique is layering of colors. This is important for achieving greater or lesser intensity.

Today, many classes are offered by experts and courses can even be taken online. It is easy to master the basics and amateur artists have more opportunities than ever before. Many people prefer to have a teacher with years of experience who can help them to grow. The fact that so many people have access to learn these techniques, means that more and more of them are able to express their creativity in this way.

This has resulted in a proliferation of paintings for sale, particularly online. Some of these are more amateurish than others but there are also many exceptionally, talented artists displaying their work. For those art lovers who feel that purchasing artwork is just too expensive, this is not always the case. Of course, the more experienced artists price their work accordingly but one may be lucky enough to purchase an amazing work from an upcoming, new artist at a fairly reasonable cost.

Watercolors have seen a steady rise in popularity. They give artists freedom to experiment with forms, colors and textures on many kinds of paper. They convey dreams, emotions and more in their own particular style. Abstract art has a unique place and is is likely to become even more popular in years to come.
