Information About Crossfit

By Rod Bourgoine

If you want to start a program of total physical fitness, you probably have been researching different types of exercise plans and systems. You might have heard a lot about CrossFit, which has become one of the most popular fitness programs in the country, with more than 6,000 CrossFit gyms now in operation. Here are some facts about CrossFit and what it is all about.

Unlike many exercise systems, which tend to focus mostly on cardiovascular exercise, CrossFit includes aerobic exercises along with weight lifting and body weight exercises for a total strengthening and conditioning workout. Two reasons why CrossFit is so popular is that it is an intense all-over body workout, but the workouts are fairly short usually running about 30 minutes or even less, although some gyms do offer hour-long CrossFit sessions.

Each day's CrossFit routine is different from the day before, which tends to increase interest and enthusiasm for the program. In addition, the creators of CrossFit designed the program to increase your level of fitness in 10 different areas, so a myriad of exercises are taught in order to reach this goal of total body fitness. These areas include improving agility, flexibility, strength, stamina, power, balance, coordination, accuracy, cardiovascular fitness and respiratory fitness.

To achieve optimum fitness in these specific categories, your daily workout will include the CrossFit combination of weight training, body weight movements and cardio activities. The cardio portion gets your heart pumping with intense exercises such as rowing and jumping rope. Body weight activities use the body as a weight or as resistance and will include everything from sit-ups to box jumps to lunges and rope climbs. Weight training is just as diverse, using tires, kettlebells and traditional barbells in many ways.

CrossFit has become so popular that there is a yearly competition held each summer, and the winners in the main female and male categories win $275,000. During the first games in 2007, the prize money was just $500. The competition includes the main competition for participants younger than 40, and then there are several Masters categories for older participants, including a category for competitors aged 60 and older.

CrossFit is an intense physical exercise program and probably not an option for some people. Before beginning any exercise program, it is always best to consult with a trusted medical professional.
