The Art Of Doll Repairs And Restoration

By Patrice McCoy

A doll is an imagery imitation of the real thing. It may be an imitation of a human being, a house, a tree, an animal or even cars. Usually, dolls do not function like the real thing does, hence are mostly used to keep children busy and entertained by making them think they have the actual object. These dolls many a time do get spoiled and instead of buying new ones, repairs on the same can be done. Doll repairs and restoration can be done by individuals or some firms which have specialized on the same.

The dolls depending on their manufacturing companies are made of different materials. Some imitations are metallic, others wooden, some plastic and others even made of cotton. Once these dolls get damaged and need repair at the concerned firms, one needs to identify the material that comprises the imitation, before selecting which company to forward it to, since the repair firms have specialized in repairing specific materials of imitations, considering their convenience.

These firms work in such a manner that, they may exchange damaged dolls from various homes in exchange for other objects. These dolls are later on taken for reconstructions after which they are put on display for re-sale. In cases where the owners want to retain their dolls, they forward them to the imitation repair firms for repair, but this is usually done at a fee.

Specialization of these firms in terms of their operations has necessitated up to standard ownership of the required professionals and equipments. Imitation repair organizations dealing with the repair of metallic imitations have with them the most essential of their equipments which are furnaces necessary to generate the extremely high temperatures required for melting down the metallic dolls. These reproductions are then molded into the desired shapes and completed appropriately by paintings, drawings and polishing where necessary.

Firms that deal with the repair of wooden dolls are equipped with experienced and well trained carvers. These professionals carve the damaged dolls into their original shapes after which finishing services such as paintings and writings are done. These types of firms do not need much technology as compared to the metallic doll repair firms.

Cotton and other material imitations also are handled by firms specialized in such. These centers are also well equipped with the necessary material and people with skill. Cotton, other material, thread and strings are their equipment among others. Their work majorly involves creation and fixing of matching patches on the damaged areas of the imitations. Dolls damaged through burning, tearing or whichever way, provided their material is cotton have their repairs done in these firms.

Apart from repairing of these simulations to regain their original conditions, these firms also offer extra services such as modification on already existing dolls in the event of repairing them. An extra fee for this is paid though. Modifications however call for much more skill and creativity in comparison to repairing alone, since it is as good as coming up with an original piece.

Doll repairs and restoration basically is a form of recycling, as it involves re-using of already existing material to make either the same objects or modified forms of the original objects. Through it, pollution and cost have been minimized and has therefore grown to be an art advocated for in many parts of the world.
