Have Fun With Breyer Horses

By Jerri Eide

Collecting Breyer horses is a wonderful hobby. It can keep children busy for hours as they tend for their stable full of models. Practically every breed of horse and pony is represented and these beautifully designed scale models have been created with a real eye for detail. It is a great honor for any famous competition horse to be produced in Breyer form.

The animals have been made for many years and the company has stayed true to its extremely high quality and craftsmanship. The horse figures are made in a mold, and then finished carefully to remove any seams. There various markings such as socks, blazes and other colorings are added at the end of production.

Limited editions of certain types and styles run each year. These are very popular with collectors and can also be traded. The most highly priced models are the one of a kind horses that are given out as prizes at the yearly Breyerfest events. These popular events are attended by collectors and enthusiasts from all over the country.

The standard models are made to 1:9 scale. They measure about eleven inches long and eight inches high. The smaller models known as the classics are dollhouse scale and can fit into the specially made barns. They provide years of creative entertainment to children and are the perfect way to introduce children to the fun of collecting.

Birthdays and holidays are a great time to add to a collection of model equines. There are also saddles and bridles to purchase in both English and western style. Children will love learning about how to care for a horse or pony whilst playing with their models. The stablemate size is only 1:32 and are great for taking on a long car trip or anywhere that involves some waiting time.

The huge yearly event known as Breyerfest began in 1990 and is held at the world famous Kentucky Horse Park. It runs for three days and offers the opportunity to trade, sell and buy models. There are also highly competitive classes to show model horses. The two most popular categories are the Live show in which the horse is judge on all sides. The photo show category is less demanding as the horse is only inspected from one side.

Breyer horses are well made and will last for many years. They also offer excellent value for money and are the perfect way to start children off with a collection they can really play with and not just look at. Children love to give their favorite horse or pony a name and its own unique set of characteristics.
