Ray Ban Sunglasses

By David Gill

A long association with creating timeless pieces that transcend traditional fashion expectations and can be worn across any season is a part of what has made the Ray Ban brand today so successful and so widely regarded in the fashion industry.

The Ray Ban range is full of popular designs but two of the most popular are the aviator and wayfarer ranges. The aviator style was brought into the limelight through the infamous cult hit Top Gun, when the main character played by Tom Cruise wore the design throughout the movie. Developed to protect pilots from the sun's harmful rays in 1936, the protective levels of the Ray Ban range quickly became one of its major selling points. Allowing only up to 20% of the natural light into the wearer's eyes, the glasses were originally tempered with G-15 tempered lenses to provide maximum sun protection. The convex design of the sunglasses which covers two to three times the area of the wearer's eye is designed to stop harmful rays entering the eyes at any angle.

The popular movie Breakfast at Tiffany's brought the wayfarer range to popularity in 1961 when its main protagonist Audrey Hepburn was seen wearing the sunglasses throughout the film. The design today is one of Ray Ban's best-sellers. Undergoing a revamp over the last decade, bolder and brighter colours have been introduced to the range in order to bring it in line with the 21st century fashion styles and these changes have seen the brand once again become a hit with festival goers and music industry professionals alike.

The Ray Ban brand creates a range of bold and bright sunglasses to accompany any outfit. The importance of colour has been evident through Ray Ban's re launching of some of its classic designs in brighter and bolder colours in an aim to target a wider market. Pink floral patterns alongside purples, oranges and other bright colours have been introduced into the popular wayfarer range.

The commitment to style and safety today makes the Ray Ban brand one of the most respected sunglasses brands in the world.
