Wild pheasant hunting is a tradition that has been kept for years. It is a family activity that helps to form new friendships and strengthen those that already exist. The activity requires some knowledge and skill. The sport does not need a lot of equipment though, making it even more popular. It however may take several years for one to learn the finer details. Understanding the basics is not hard though; literally everyone that has interest will be able to get started.

There are people that do not have their pieces of land, which requires them to choose a location that is preferable. The number of public land options are diverse. There exist several areas that have numerous birds with few hunters. This however is not a very important factor to consider. Choosing the right spots is very important and is an important consideration.

There will be requirement of a good map that has a display of land that is public and used for recreational purposes. For the majority of states, there are online sources used for finding the right locations. The maps may be sufficient but one may still need to use topographic atlases for even better coverage. The atlases are easy to use. There is ability to locate the right public lands, with enough details to find them.

One of the most important considerations is the distance to be travelled. One should be able to strike a balance between distances that they can drive and the best spots for hunting. For beginners, the preferred locations should be close enough with plenty of birds. Considering several grounds ensures one has options, just in case of anything.

The preferred grounds are supposed to have enough cover. Examples of such crops are prairie grass and creek bottoms. One should confirm that the available cover offer good options for hunting. Places that are close to buildings, livestock or highways are never the best options. Further, locations close to rivers or which lie in restricted areas need to be avoided because of poor accessibility. Areas with crops nearby are good because they are a source of food to the birds.

The clothes used for hunting need to be as comfortable as possible because one may end up walking long distances, at times through heavy cover. The clothes chosen should allow free movement and also be warm enough to ensure comfort. Hunters should not walk fast because then they would end up passing many pheasants. By walking slowly, the dogs are given enough time to fully work all ground for scents.

The use of dogs cannot be underrated. These animals have the ability to track and find the birds with precision and accuracy. Even in instances when the birds are already shot in the air, they will be difficult to find without dogs. For better advantage, one should hunt into the wind. The dog also needs to be trained well on how to run.

There are various pieces of equipment used in wild pheasant hunting. Every person will always have their preferred style, which makes the choice of equipment different for many. Boots used ought to be waterproof.
