Diaper Bags: From Mindful Moms To Lovers Of Luxury

By Marilyn V. Sprague

Whether you're a beach mom who appreciates the virtues of vinyl or a business mom who prefers the luxury of leather, today's diaper bags suit any style. From designer exteriors to interiors full of cleverly devised extras, there are diaper bags to fit every expectation. From the conventional rectangular style to back-pack, bag, and satchel styles, and even the doctor-bag-inspired style from Petunia Pickle Bottom, today's mom has it good!

Whether you want a lean and slim bag to just get you there and back or one that allows you the freedom of being out all day, the varieties of bags today can provide you with everything you need when you're out and about. These bags have dozens of pouches for everything from baby's needs to Mom's needs. Nobody wants to have to struggle with a purse in addition to toting the diaper bag, and the latest bags eliminate the need to carry both.

For the eco and safety aware mom, there are vinyl bags without PVC, and some still with PVC but none of the dangerous chemicals of earlier vinyl bags. For instance, the manufacturers of Kalencom bags indicate that, although their bags contain PVC, they are free of phthalates, DEHP, DEP and AZO. Timi & Leslie shuns PVC all together with their faux leather bags. Petunia Pickle Bottom designs have restricted their vinyl with their Cake models of cut velvet.

Diaper bag designers of the 21st century have seriously done a make-over on the traditional bag. Some have done away with the flat, belt-type straps using instead a rolled design filled with sand for comfort and flexibility when carrying. Whether you prefer short carry style, long shoulder-hanging style, or attaching the bag to your stroller, these new bags are outfitted with scalable straps. Many of today's models also sport magnetic closures instead of snaps or buttons which can tear the material.

These bags are designed to grow with your child, so whether you're carrying bottles, pacifiers, or cups, they can handle it all.

Special pockets are designed for Mom to carry her things, and some even have built-in clutch purses and key clips. Some styles from Timi & Leslie, even include credit card slots. Clever slim-designed bags can have either a special rollout changing pad pocket or a zipped bag base containing the changing pad. Some designs include a sack for soiled items, or to be used as a dust cover when the carrier is stored. Other features are cell phone holders, special Thinsulate pockets to keep bottles warm or cool, and even embossed wipey cases in matching colors.
