Can't Decide What To Knit This Spring?

By Aaron Duggins

Warm weather is upon us, and many knitters aren't sure what they should knit, associating knitting with making warm sweaters and winter accessories. The truth is, there are a huge variety of items you can knit for warmer weather! Walk around your local yarn store and get inspired by some of the lighter weight yarns this spring.

Bags are a great spring knit, as you can use them all year round. Market bags become huge in the springtime, as farmer's markets open across the country. Market bags are eco-friendly and stylish. The most popular market bag on ravelry.com is the Grrlfriend Bag, with over 2,500 projects.

If you're looking for a bigger spring project, consider making a lacy cardigan with three quarter sleeves, or a knitted vest. These projects are larger than accessories, but can still be worn in warmer weather. A great knit to check out is the short sleeved cardigan, Abelone.

Other large spring projects include very lightweight shawls, which are perfect for a chilly spring evening. Many people make cute knit dresses for the spring, or beach cover-ups in anticipation of the summer ahead. Cotton and bamboo yarns are perfect for these kinds of projects.

Socks are another popular spring knit, because they can be worn all year round. Short socks that are made of lightweight yarn are great for warm weather. Those who do spring yoga enjoy knitting yoga socks and mat carriers.

If you want to use lightweight yarns, consider knitting for children and babies. This is a great time to catch up on knitting for newborn babies. Popular baby projects include blankets, sweaters, hats, and booties.

If you do a lot of knitting for the holidays, the spring may be a great time to start. If you have a large family, or are considering projects that will take months to finish, start your fall and winter knitting now! It will save you time and pressure later in the year.

Household items are also great for spring knitting. Small toys for children, coffee cozies, and dishcloths all make great spring knitting. There are so many projects you can knit for the warmer weather, you'll never have to put down your knitting needles!
