Things You Can Find On Poetry Contest Sites

By Shirley Hughes

There is a common understanding that great poets are born with the talent. However, this does not take away the place of how work and studies in achieving this feat. A good poet must be imaginative and also able to express his ideas on paper. A majority of poets who are good at this look out for competitions they can enroll for at some poetry contest sites.

Going to the website will reveal a lot of things about any competition that is active. People visit contest sites to know several things including the prizes to be won. Some good poets feel they may be wasting their time participating in the prize does not look handsome. On the other hand, some others wouldn't mind learning anew if the prizes are mouthwatering.

Sometimes, the prizes include a trip to a city where you have always wanted to be. This is how several young scholars took flights abroad for the first time. If you have never visited any other country, you may begin practicing poetry because it can pay off in this regard. Just being mentioned as a finalist can grant you a flight ticket to America, Europe, Australia and other parts of the world.

Some other winners can be given scholarships. The scholarship opportunity may be for the winner to go to school in any school of choice to study literature. This is done because it is believed that people who are brilliant enough to win contests in poem writing will be outstanding when given an opportunity to study in a good school. Sometimes, the scholarship is partial but there are also full scholarships for winners.

Money is also given as a prize. If the money is big, some people would love to join even when they think they may not win. Depending on the stages involved, the money mapped out for this is planned for the different winners that may emerge in each category. Winners of each region should not get as much as is given to the overall winner.

It is also important to know what the organizers have set for the age limit. Some contests are for those who are children, some for teens and some for those under the age of twenty-five. If you are advanced in age, you may have to spend more time looking for those with no age limit.

Also, try to find out if you have to pay a fee before submitting your work. This is important because you would have to look for the money if you don't have it and this can take some time too. In case you are not too sure of this, ask others who may be interested in the contest so that you can be sure if money is required or not. You wouldn't have to waste your time writing a long poem if you don't have the money for submitting it.

Every poetry competition has a closing date. This is the date when no more submissions will be accepted. Knowing this date will help you plan yourself well so that you can write and edit before the closure. You may also want to see a friend who may be better than you to help you edit it.
