And if you are raising some of them for business, all the more reason why you have to spend time building some sort of support mechanism for them. For a plant as delicate as tomatoes, the need for support in their growth is highly necessary.

Now you can do it by yourself. Handmade tomato cages are now gaining popularity among those who are raising the plant. The materials are simple and the steps are easy. Once done, you can already use it to guide the plants in growing vertically rather than sprouting in different areas.

Of course, there are also units that are readily available in the market. You can buy them easily if you want. But if you are planning to have many cages, then might as well created them at home and save money. As mentioned, the materials used for this are simple. When making some, you can start by thinking about the following.

Size of the cage. You can start off with the most basic requirement which is the sizing. This can vary depending on the height of the plant. Before making anything, your first job is to measure those that you want to place inside the cage. Measure the width and the length, and provide a small allowance to give the plant some breathing space.

Material for caging. There are few options like wires, woods and plastics. There is nothing wrong with all of these. However, you may want to consider your own comfort when choosing one. Woods are more sturdy while plastic may be easier to construct. Wires can be bent, amking them flexible for adjustments.

Design. If you value the good looks of the cage, then you are better of considering this matter. You can make it into something rectangular, cone shaped and circular. You can even make use of that typical bird cage format as a guide.

Number of cages. Get the exact number you want to build and decide if you are capable of doing them alone. If you want, you can tag your family members or your friends along. Making them can be a great bonding time for you. The more you plan to build, the more time will be required. Create a schedule for your convenience.

Maintenance. This is something that is often forgotten by a lot of home owners. But just like any other tools, the cages also need maintenance every now and then. Cleaning them after a rain for instance will remove those dirt away. Also, doing some regular check up on them will help you assess if there are some areas of the cage that needs repair.

Creating cages for your tomatoes is among your responsibilities as the owner. Grow them well and enjoy a great harvest. There is no need to spend so much. If you can rummage your store room and find some raw materials that you can use, then go for it.
