Siddharth Malhotra in Karan Johar's film's song, "Ratta Maar"

By Rohini Nadia

Student of the year is termed as Karan Johar's first film without his good friend and lucky-star, Shah Rukh Khan. But then again, the film isn't completely void of Shah Rukh Khan's influences. The fifth film directed by Karan Johar, Student of the Year partly produced by Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment banner and Dharma Productions. Starring three fresh faces, Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, the film follows Karan Johar's debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) and My Name Is Khan (2010), all of which stared Shah Rukh Khan.

As for Student of the Year, Shah Rukh Khan seems to have a special attachment with the film. The superstar has been mentoring the newcomers in the movie, particularly Siddharth Malhotra. He has been advising Siddharth on various issues and has been regularly dishing out tips of stardom to the debutant and his co-star, Varun Dhawan. Siddharth and Varun together worked as assistant directors for Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan, where they showed a load of potential on the sets.

"Ratta Maar" has Vishal Dadlani and Shefali Alvares on vocals and was composed by music-director duo Vishal Shekhar, who has also composed the rest of the album. The song is cheerful and youthful and will have youngsters hooked. As for the soundtrack's lyrics, these were penned by dialogue writer, screenplay writer, story writer and lyricist Anvita Dutt Guptan.

Besides "Ratta Maar" and the songs mentioned above, Karan Johar's Student of the Year soundtrack also includes numbers like "Ishq Wala Love", a romantic song sung by Shekhar Ravjiani, Salim Merchant and Neeti Mohan, Shahid Mallya's track titled "Kukkad" and the final song on the album called "Mashup of the Year", a mix of all the previous songs. Music aside, this Karan Johar film also holds a load of potential with its charming story-line that projects the highs and lows of teenage life and relationships. In this movie, the protagonists befriend each other despite their distinct personalities. As the story progresses, they compete against each other and lock horns to win the prestigious Student of the Year Trophy.

Student of the Year released on the 19th of October, 2012, and produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions and Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment.
