How to Train Your Dog Successfully

By Dirk Gruenberg

Dogs love learning and their obedience training is a big part of their lives, especially as puppies. Naturally, most dog lovers are inclined to treat their pups as they would treat kids, but one really shouldn't.

Living together will require you to make compromises. Among others, your dog will have to be taught to behave appropriately. And dog obedience training will play a major part in his education.

How to house train your dog: There are two steps you need to take to house train your dog. To begin with, you need to set up a living place for your dog.

Why? Well, dogs are genetically wired to do their best to keep their living area clean. This area can be in any part of the house; where exactly is up to you.

After having completed the first step, you need to show your dog the spot where he can do his business. If you bring him there repeatedly, he will eventually understand the process. This is also true for his living quarters. He might not understand it the first time around, but if you bring him there again and again, he will get it.

How to stop your dog from biting: Nipping and nibbling isn't too bad when your dog is still a puppy but as he gets older, he might hurt you and damage your property. This behavior should be stopped while he is still young.

Train him to stop by yelling "ouch" and ignoring him when he bites you. By doing this, your dog will connect biting with a loud noise and the loss of his playmate. This might discourage him from biting again.

Want to stop your dog from barking? If he barks constantly and for apparently no reason, tell him no. And do so often. And, most importantly, do so in an assertive manner.

And never forget: Training your dog will make the two of you get along much better than you would otherwise. It will make you bond, too, and you'll enjoy each other's company much, much more.
