Finding the Best Freeware

By Marta Howells

Freeware is free software that you can download for free. The term Freeware refers to free software. There is not any limit at all to the amount of times it can be downloaded and you do not need a licence.

There is a wide range of different Freeware on offer. Freeware is a fabulous resource for internet users. Most individuals are extremely wary about downloading free software because they are worried about viruses. These concerns are relevant, as some of the Freeware out there does in fact contain viruses and malicious software.

In order to protect your computer you need to be mindful of the possible risks and take steps to avoid them, you can't download anything which attracts you without making sure it is safe first. It is safer to stick to the bigger Freeware websites. The best sites tend to test and check their programs prior to they share them with users.

This is not always the case mind you, as many are much more focussed on quantity not quality. Many will list anything allowing them to brag a huge selection. So size is no guarantee of safety.

With so many Freeware programs available it is a challenge to identify the right ones to download. Searching forums is a good way to find out about the best websites. You can save yourself a huge amount of time by learning through other users experiences. Big directories which permitusers to leave feedback and rate their experience with software products are also very informative and useful.

Some of the Freeware programs are free because they are completely useless and nobody would ever dream of actually paying to use them. Other programs are handy but people would not want to pay for them.

Then there are the brilliant freeware programs that have been built by gifted programmers who have a desire to to share their great software. Why would anyone spend all that time on a project to release it free of charge? Many aspire to get credit further down the line for masterminding a great piece of software. Many programmers will also take donations as a type of payment for their work, but this is not expected. There is never an obligatory payment.

Freeware is sometimes confused with Shareware. The two are significantly different. With Shareware you can use software for a trial period for free, but you are required to pay the programmer for the full version if you want to carry on using it.
